North Dakota again makes Letterman Top 10

BISMARCK–David Letterman has once again included North Dakota in one of his Top 10 lists.

On the show tonight, the list topic was “Signs the United States is running out of money.”

One of those signs? “There’s a listing on eBay for North Dakota.”

So, in the spirit of good humor, let the fun begin. How much do you think North Dakota is worth?

PS: You can find the entire Top 10 list here.

  1. With all the great people, add in no shortage of water, and lots of oil – at least a trillion! But we’d never sell, because whoever bought it would surely run it into the ground!

  2. 200 billion oil X 95 per barrel = 19 Trillion
    351 billion tons of coal X 13.59 = 4.8 Trillion
Price of total Land = ??
    Price of Ag = ??
    manufacturer exports = ??

I would say more in the quadrillion to quintillion range

  3. I don’t know but I claculated that just half a days’ North Dakota oil production currently equals what Thomas Jefferson paid for the whole Louisina purchase … not counting the devaluation of the dollar since then.

  4. I would be making fun of north dakota too, I mean we only have a 3% unemployment rate, our residents help each other when we need help, we can leave our doors unlocked at night and not fear being robbed or murdered while we sleep and are away, we have more sunshine than any other state in the union (albeit most of it under snow cover) and lastly but not least we just found out that we have more oil in our ground than Texas ever did in their history. Lots of things to tease Nodak for.

    • They also have said North Dakota may have more oil than Alaska does as well. I would never sell North Dakota we are only one of three states that always have a surplus.

  5. Hmm, let’s see…

    Lowest unemployment rate in nation
    Thousands of jobs available
Only state with a budget surplus during the recession

Yeah, I think North Dakota should be putting the rest of the nation on eBay!

      • IF ND WOULD PAY ITS BILLS INCLUDING ALL THE COST OF FLOODING. THEN IT WOULD HAVE LESS MONEY THAN IT MIGHT EXPECT. ND COULDNT AFORD HALF OF MINNESOTAS BILLS

          • No he’s not. North Dakota could never pay Minnesota’s bills. If it wasn’t for the oil, ND would be broke just like the rest of the nation. Minnesota had twice as much going for it until the shutdown than North Dakota does AND we did it without the oil. Even now, the only thing going for North Dakota that Minnesota doesn’t have is the surplus.

        • well, ummm
what about the flooding in Moorehead Minnesota? and all the other areas along the red river of MN.
Why don’t u help out those people

  6. Leasing NoDak would make more sense. USA makes money during the term of the lease, and gets it all back at the end of the term. Make it a triple-net, and the USA couldn’t lose. The trade-off would be that NoDak residents would have to be exempt from federal income taxes.

  7. IF ND WOULD PAY ITS BILLS INCLUDING ALL THE COST OF FLOODING. THEN IT WOULD HAVE LESS MONEY THAN IT MIGHT EXPECT. ND COULDNT AFORD HALF OF MINNESOTAS BILLS…

  8. North Dakota – oil, coal, grain foods,
Minnesota – iron ore, fish, forestry, a waterway to the ocean
South Dakota – minerals, gold, silver, a nice monument, and a place to go south to for the winter

we’ll call ourselves the country of ______________

  9. Price? Hell, ND could be its own country. We have the money, the oil, the guns, and the nukes. Séparatiste!

  10. Ok here is the deal. ND should do like Alaska & write us a check every year for a an oil we get from the state..Someone please look into this for ND… We deserve it!

    • Hello, @Jack. Thanks for writing! I have written about this issue in the past. I’ll see if I can find a former story link explaining why North Dakota doesn’t do this. We wrote about it during last summer’s Running With Oil project, so it would be somewhere at runningwithoil.com

  11. Your all just jeolous, because we have a surplus of money and we know how to budget our money and we have the only state bank owned in ND.
HAHAHAHAHA ……….we may be small but we sure know how to run a state and not worry about the so called recesion you all are dealing with.

  12. North Dakota probable and a few other states that could really prosper as a self-governed country. All you really need is power (wind, coal, oil) and food. ND don’t really need any form of military; ND can be the Switzerland of the Americas.

  14. lots of pride as there should be….but Gary ……your comment about all of the days of sunshine is a tad off…….there are plenty of cloudy and gloomy days in ND and MN…….in fact, the weather is the armpit of the US…..where does the weather (including wind and mosquitos) suck more than Fargo/Moorhead? OK- maybe Pembina….

  15. North Dakota stinks!!!! the people here are very cruel and racist— they have lied and cheated and stolen this land from the Native Americans, there is much hate festering in this state and has been so from day one—these are a Germanic people here who have a superiority complex—they need to open their eyes as to what is going to happen to this God forsaken state—how cna one claim wealth and prosperity when it was never yours to begin with—there is a storm comin North Dakotans look out!!—
